Shared note

When Jacob enlisted in the Army in 1916, he declared he was born a t Rosewood, Ipswich. This needs to be verified.

Les BUSH says that Jacob had a daughter named Patsy, who died aged 8 yrs .

Jacob served in the A.I.F. during WW1.He enlisted in Bundaberg on 12 Se p 1916. He was 28 years old. He embarked on the "Ayrshire" for Europe o n 24Jan 1917. He served in England and then Belgium and France (where h e was wounded in action by a bullet wound to his left thigh on 3 Apr 191 8). A week later he was returned to England and was a hospital inmate fo r some weeks. In August 1918 he was taken on the strength of the Austra lian Provost Corp. He returned to Australia on the "Ceramic", disembarki ng on 6 May 1920. He was discharged from the A.I.F. on 19 Jun 1920. H e was now 32 years old. See relevant Army papers for further details . He was awarded three medals.

He married four days after his discharge.

He was living at Palmwoods in 1944 when his younger brother, William, di ed.

Mr. Tom Leyden recalled that "Jacob Schaefer worked on the Bajool/Toond a road, 1922, up past the school. His wage was 14 pounds, 16 shilling s and 3 pence ($29.62) for 48 hour week and he supplied horses and dray. "
It is assumed that Jacob did this work and not his father (Jakob), who w ould have been 64 years old at the time.
