Occupation Optometrist.

Friedrich emigrated to The U.S.A. in 1895 - He was about 26 or 27 yea rs of age He was naturalised as an American citizen in 1900.

Soon after Fred married Margaret in 1901, the following notice appeare d in the local newspaper -

"AGAIN ON DECK
Mr. F. W. Laufer, the well-known optician, has returned from his weddin g trip and is again attending to business at his centrally located store, northwest corner o f Washington and Tenth Streets (Wishart's drug store). He is receiving the congratulatio ns of his many friends, who are legion, and in return, the popular "eye tester" is giving the gl ad hand. The numerous patrons of Mr. Laufer will be pleased to know he is back once more at hi s post of duty to attend to their wants".

Later, it seems Fred gained his own separate rooms as the following news paper advertisement seems to show. -

"WHEN YOU THINK OF GLASSES THINK OF LAUFER WHY? Because his glasses are neat and stylish They are made to fit the face and they fulfill their mission Satisfaction, Price and Durability guaranteed F. W. LAUFER Optician 1901 Washington St. Cor. Tenth --- EX ---- Wishart's Drug Store. "

In 1926 or 1927 Fred posed in a photo with 11 other optometrists who wer e all active in lobbying for the curriculum in optometry at the Universty of California. Berkeley . The photo was taken at the Athens Athletic club in Oakland. (Berkeley Optometry Magazine Vol 1, No1., FAL L 2008)

Fred was a member of the Oakland Rotary club in Oakland. In 1932, Fred , with 19 other members, was named as being active in the club for 20 years. (The Rotarian Magazin e Nov. 1932).

His last known address in December 1924 was: 487 Fourteenth Street, Oa kland, California.

Upon Fred's death the following story appeared in the local newspape r -

"Laufer -- Self-Made Man !

The soubriquet "self-made man" is steadily becoming an anachronism wha t with advantages that bestrew the path of all who would achieve distinction in some selec ted profession or occupation. In Fred W. Laufer's youth, however, it was a different stor y. He came from his native Australia as a slim but baldish young man determined to become an optome trist. That meant that what he learned must be on his own and he pored over the availabl e library books until he mastered the rudiments, manufactured most of his own grinding machiner y and finally set up shop just 40 years ago last August in the corner of a downtown drug stor e -- downtown being 10th and Washington in ------------------?-------------------- a smal l clientele and was in his own place of business at 1334 Washington Street. When he celebrated his 40th anni versary a few months ago, among those who sent congratulations were several fifth generation s of families who had been under Laufer's care. From the beginning Laufer took an active inte rest in the civic affairs of Oakland, holding office in many organizations, in addition to those d evoted to his own business. His death at seventy followed close on the heels of a reunio n with his sister who came from Australia for a visit during the Exposition. It was the firs t time they had met since he left home four decades ago. "

His sister, Emilie Schafer travelled to the USA on the liner, "Mariposa " in March of 1939.

The following death notice appeared in the newspaper "Oakland Tribune" o n Saturday the 18th of November, 1939 -
"LAUFER - In Oakland, November 17, 1939, Frederick William, beloved husb and of Margaret Laufer, loving father of Eloise Siegrist, Florence Siegrist and Muriel Helm, gra ndfather of Laufer and Betty Cobbledick, Jack Siegrist, Margaret and Lynn Helm; a native of Australia ; a member of Sequois Lodge No. 349, F.and A.M.,Ashman Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S., Knights Templar , Scottish Rite bodies and Oakland Lodge, No. 171, B.P.O.E. Friends are invited to attend services at the Grant D. Miller Mortuarie s Inc., East 14th Street, corner 24th Avenue, Oakland, Monday, November 20, 1939, at eleven o'clock; Intu rment California Cematory."

A second notice in the same newspaper (and on the same page) read as fol lows - "RITES SET MONDAY FOR FRED LAUFER Funeral services will be held Monday for Fred. W. Laufer, Oakland opt ometrist, who has been a figure in the civic life of the city for nearly half a century. Laufer was stricken with a heart attack during a dinner being held in hi s honor by colleagues at the Athens Athletic Club on Thursday evening. Active in Masonic circles and a leader in the National affairs of the op tometrists, Laufer recently celebrated his 40th year in business in this city. Laufer is survived by his widow, Mrs. Margaret Laufer, and three daughte rs, Eloise Siegrist, Florence Siegrist and Muriel Helm. Last rites will be held at the Mille r Mortuary, East Fourteenth Street and 24th Avenue at 11 a.m. Monday.
