| Shared note | Parish register shows that Wilhelm Gottlieb was confirmed in the ch urch at Endersbach on 22 Apr 1838, the first Sunday after Easter. He was in a confirmation gro up of 10 youths and 10 maidens all born in 1824. His marriage (in 1850) to Friederike in Beutelsbach was officiated by Pa stor Ludwig. He was 25 years old. The marriage banns were read in both Endersbach and Beute lsbach on the second Sunday of Epiphany and the Sunday nine weeks before Easter, i.e . during January. In Germany, Wilhelm worked in vineyards He emigrated with his wife and three children on the sailing ship "Peru" , departing Hamburg 5 Dec 1854, and arriving in Sydney 23 May 1855. The family arrived in Brisbane 2 Ju l 1855 probably on the coastal steamer "Boomerang". The "Brisbane Courier" confirms that 10 steerage passenger s arrived from Sydney on the "Boomerang". Wilhelm and his family must have lived at Logan River soon after their a rrival because son Johann Friederick
was born at Logan River in 1857. Working on cotton farms was the most l ikely occupation there. He applied for naturalisation on 24 Mar 1860, and was naturalised on 1 6 Apr 1860 in Ipswich. On the 24th of February 1870 Wilhelm's wife Friederike died and withi n a few weeks he moved to live at Ebenezer on Lot 232 (63 acres), which he had earlier leased fro m the Queensland Government in partnership with Carl Bergmann in 1867. In 1869, Wilhelm had also taken up a "Homestead Selection" on Lot 242 (5 6 acres), which adjoined Lot 232. Lots 232 and 242 are located south of Coopers Road and immediately wes t of Lanes Road, Ebenezer. In January 1875, Wilhelm was living at Stone Quarry when he married Ann a Baum, nee Jackman, and in July of that year he applied to purchase Lot 242. Perhaps the widow Ann a brought some money with her?? Wilhelm died on the 26th of April 1909 and was buried in the Lutheran Se ction of the Ipswich cemetery, Site No. 8346. He was 84 years old. Cause of death was chronic bronchi tis. |
